Don’t give up anything for Lent! Take something on, instead. For many, Ash Wednesday marks the start of a tiny little adjustment to our usual diet. We might give up a chocolate biscuit with our coffee, or that second glass of wine in the evening.
But standing with Christ at the foot of the cross demands a preparation much more thoughtful and significant than that. So instead of giving up something you should not be having regularly in any case, take on an extra spiritual dicipline.
You might attend a Weekday Mass in addition to your Sunday obligation. Say the rosary on Wednesday mornings after breakfast. Come and adore Christ present in the sacrament on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 pm at St Joseph’s. Or come along to Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 6.15.
Lent is a season of active preparation for Easter. Make the most of it this year.
